On Those Crazy Suicidal Rodents: Lemmings

Not for animal lovers or the faint of heart! The following video footage is from the 1958 Disney movie "White Wilderness" and captures the lovable Lemming apparently committing suicide by jumping off a cliff in Canada. However, supposedly the Lemming is not native to Canada and Disney had to ship them in. What is occuring is allegedly not a real natural event according to snopes.com, but is rather preternatural one; the vast Lemming herd consisting of only a couple dozen or so rodents, but filmed in a way to make it look like a large pack animals. Furthermore, this supposedly prompted the utilization of a giant turntable which the Lemmings scrambled about on and the use of trick photography. Truth is, I don't know if Lemmings are indigenous to Canada or not and some dispute that "fact", but they are described in books about Canadian wildlife including "Never Cry Wolf," by Farley Mowat, though this was written concerning the Northwest Territories, while the video was shot in Alberta. Yet, with a name like Farley Mowat, can you really trust him? Odd thing is, Alberta doesn't have a large open body of water, yet one appears in the film, however it could be one of Alberta's many lakes or the footage could have been staged elsewhere. Anyhoo, without further ado: The Lemming Suicide video featuring Van Halen. Don't say I didn't warn you PETA.

Ah Yes, typical Disney for you. Though allegedly staged from who knows where, it should be added that Lemmings have been known on occasion to accidentally fall to their death from the cliffs that line the fjords of Norway. The perfect vacation spot for any enthusiastically boating Boa indulging in a lengthy sabbatical. "Boating Boa"; damn, now thats funny!
